In it for the long haul?

I‘ll tell you why people fail in network marketing. At the beginning the income is not really impressive so they throw the baby out with the bath water. Every truly wealthy person will tell you that it did not happen overnight. It seems like...

What drives us?

Today 11/9/11 I attended the “Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us” Webinar held by the folks at @GoToMeeting.

The big take away I got from the webinar was that the if/then reward/punishment that we have been using for years is no longer working as we evolve. It DOES work for mechanical skills, physical work and repetitive white collar work, however it does not work when we add in even rudimentary cognitive skills. Also if we are using the if/then reward/punishment paradigm in our workplace, it DOES NOT motivate people to change and is discourages creativity.

That thinking is the wrong thinking for the 21st century, and a lot of companies are still stuck with these ideas.

People are not robots and we are incredibly complex. He gave an example of a day care center. The center had a few parents who would come in late, but most wouldn’t because they realized that the day care staff would have to stay late. (Moral Obligation) They wanted to deter their customers from coming in late so they decided to implement a punishment mechanism by making parents who were late pay more money. What do you think happened?

More than twice the number of parents were late now. WAIT! WHAT? Yes, the punishment did not work because before they were driven by moral obligation, but now it was being dropped into the economic realm which is a commodity, simply a lower realm. People didn’t value the money as much. Hmmm.

It is a true fact that money is a motivator. If you don’t pay people enough, you will destroy motivation. But if you take money out of the equation, what drives us?

Autonomy
Autonomy or self-direction. We want engagement. How much control do we have over our time? How much control do we have over our technique, or the way we do things in our work? How much control do we have over the things we do at work, our tasks? How much control do we have over who the people on our team are, who we work with? Get out of their way. People are intelligent, treat them accordingly.
Mastery
We like to get better at stuff. We like to see progress towards meaningful work. This peace depends on a lot of feedback and not just feedback from above, but feedback from peers. We can see this clearly in social media and why so many people are driven to post about their mastery so that they can get feedback from their peers.
Purpose
This is a big one for me. What is the purpose of what we are doing? They did a study and gave people 5 minutes a day. During the 5 minutes they could:

  • Do whatever they wanted
  • Read about personal experiences of other people in this position
  • Read about experiences of end users and what effect the product/service had on them (purpose)

The people who read about the purpose did twice as good in their work that day because they were driven by a purpose.

What can you do now knowing this information?

Autonomy

You can do an Autonomy Audit here if you have not already done one. If your numbers were below 28 you are in a danger zone. You aren’t going to be very happy where you are. Those who score more than 28 are happy.

Mastery

You can do a DIY performance review. Set learning and performance goals for the next 30 days. At the end ask yourself how did I do? What do I need to change? Who can help me change, who is successful at this that will assist and mentor me? If you have challenges keeping track of the things you have done there is a great little site. iDoneThis.com it will send you an email asking you what you got done today. You simply reply to the email and then it will put it on a calendar for you. I personally use Workflowy.com to track my network marketing business because every morning it sends me an update of everything that has changed in my business for the day before.

From a management perspective, you can enable unexpected after the fact rewards. For instance, if an employee observes another employee doing well enable them to give that employee a $ 50 bonus right there on the spot.

If you are in network marketing, and are using social media, when you see some of your team mates doing well, post on their wall or tweet them. This unexpected reward will motivate them amazingly well.

Purpose

If you work for a company, read their mission statement. Can you get behind it? What is your purpose within the company? If you own a company, what is the purpose of your company? What does it do for society?

How does working in network marketing and specifically Isagenix fulfill our motivational desires?

First of all there is the money. We all know that the people who have mastered network marketing earn a tremendous amount of income. Now let’s look at the other motivating factors.

Autonomy

  • Time
In network marketing you have complete control over when you work. At the beginning you might want to work more so that you can build the foundation of your business. But after you have built a solid foundation and have residual income coming in, you can start to take more and more time off because you have separated yourself from the generation of your income.
  • Tasks
You are in complete control of what you do to build your business.
  • Team
You decide who is on your team. What is your dream team? Put it together.
  • Technique
You decide how to build your business. You are in business for yourself, but not by yourself. Everyone on your team has a vested interest in your success both the people above you and the people below you in a binary compensation plan, like the Isagenix plan.

Mastery

The network marketing industry is all about mastery. Mastery in personal growth and how to build a successful business. As a matter of fact, I used everything I learned in my 3 years of network marketing when I was in it the first time to build a world leading consulting business. I am back in the industry because I realized that with consulting it is all about me and I cannot separate myself from the generation of my income.

 Purpose

I am very motivated to change the world. I grew up with and live by what Jim Rohn said. Help enough people get what they want and you can have everything you want.

Recently I have become obsessed with the unconsciousness of people in the world. I believe that Isagenix meets my desires to help the world to become a more conscious place. Conscious of what we put in our bodies. Conscious of how we live our lives. And conscious of how we impact the world.

Isagenix’s Vison Statement:

To impact world health and free people from physical and financial pain, and in the process create the largest health-and-wellness company in the world.

Mechanics of Manifesting

I like to read before I start my day. This morning it was “The Attractor Factor” by Joe Vitale @mrfire. I was thinking about how I grew my traditional business to be the world leading Daylite implementor. I also grew my Twitter following...

Isagenix is conscious

Marn | June 23, 2011 | no comments

Why do I consider Isgenix a more conscious business? Let me give you an example. When I hire some one for my traditional business, all they can make is what I deem their work to be worth to me. They don’t have the same financial prospects as I...
